Bejeweled Online Arcade Game - Did You Know?

The largest faceted diamond in the world is the Golden Jubilee, a 546 carat yellow-brown diamond owned by King Rama IX of Thailand.

Diamonds are much less rare that most people realize. Although hundreds of millions are produced each year, diamond producers create a false sense of rarity by closely controlling the number of diamonds on the market at any particular time.

The largest faceted gemstone in the world is a 44,472 carat smoky quartz known as "The Lady". It weighs over 19 pounds and took 1,959 man-hours to cut.

Game Rules

The game begins with an eight-by-eight grid filled with randomly placed gems. Choose two adjacent gems (horizontally or vertically) to switch places on the game board. If the gems swap to create a row of three or more identical gems, the gems disappear and you earn points!

The remaining gems fall down to fill in the resulting empty spots, which can result in additional groups being formed and removed. New gems are always falling in from the top of the screen, to keep the playing area filled with 64 gems at all times.

The groups of three or more gems must be in a row either horizontally or vertically. Diagonal groups do not count, and moves that do not result in the creation of a removable group are not allowed.

If you make a row of four matching gems, one of the pieces will remain on the board as a Power Gem. Use the Power Gem in a combo and watch it blow up all the gems around it. If other Power Gems are caught in the explosion, they will detonate too!

If you create a row of five like-colored gems, one of the pieces will remain in a converted state as a Hyper Gem. When you switch this special gem with another gem, ALL gems of the same color will be removed! For example, switch a Hyper Gem with a red gem and ALL red gems will be removed!

If you ever reach a position in which there are no legal moves, the playing area will be refilled with new gems, and play will continue. There is no scoring penalty for this, but it does cost you some time, and any unused Power Gems will be lost when the grid refills.

After scoring a certain number of points, you will advance to the next level. Leveling up increases all point values, as shown below:

Points Needed

Level 1

Level 2

Level 3

975 more

Level 4

1600 more

Level 5

2375 more

Level 6

3300 more

When you level up, the grid will be cleared and filled with new gems. Any unused Power Gems and Hyper Gems will be carried over to the next level.

You begin each game with three minutes to play. A meter at the bottom of the screen indicates how much time is remaining. When the meter is empty, your time is up and the game ends.

If you sit for 15 seconds without making a swap, the game will provide a hint by flashing two interchangeable gems. You may also obtain a hint at any time by clicking on the Hint button. However, using hints, even automatic ones, will result in a score penalty of 50 points times the level multiplier.

Game Controls

Click a gem to select it. It will be highlighted. Next, click a gem above, below, to the left, or to the right of the selected gem. They will swap positions. If the swap creates a group of three or more in a row of the same gem, the group will be removed. If not, an error sound will play and the two gems will swap back.

If you select a gem and then change your mind, click on it again to unselect it.

You may also swap gems by clicking on one and dragging it with your mouse in the direction you'd like to move it.

Game Scoring

For creating a match, a base score of 10 points is awarded. If multiple matches are made from a single move (either simultaneously, or due to a chain reaction) then a base score for those additional matches is awarded as follows:

2nd match:

3rd match:

4th match:

5th match:

6th match:

7th match:

8th match:

9th match:

and beyond

Also, a bonus is added to the base score for each match based on the number of gems in the match:

3 gems:

4 gems:

5 gems:

Additionally, if any Power Gems are detonated during the collapse, they add the following amounts:

1st Power Gem:

2nd Power Gem:

3rd Power Gem:

4th Power Gem:

And so on, increasing the bonus by +10 for each additional Power Gem

When a Hyper Gem is used for a swap, it does not create a match. Instead, it destroys the gem that it was swapped with and all gems of the same color as that gem. Points are awarded as followed:

  • 75 points for the Hyper Gem itself
  • 20 points for each normal gem
  • 60 points for each Power Gem destroyed

All of the above point values are also affected by a level multiplier, as mentioned in the "Game Rules" section.

Game Strategy

Look for opportunities to create multiple matches with a single swap. This can earn you tons of extra points if you manage to create a long sequence of matches.

Try to detonate several Power Gems at once to take advantage of the bonus for chained explosions.

Hyper Gems are great to use when you are having trouble finding matches. Clearing all the gems of one color usually creates a lot of new matches in addition to scoring tons of points.

Try to level up as quickly as you can. The scoring multipliers for the higher levels can make a huge difference in your score.

You only have three minutes to score as many points as possible, so think fast and play as quickly as you can!
